Best Miter Saw Reviews:
DEWALT Sliding Compound Miter Saw
When reviewing any type of power tool, it is always a very safe bet to assume that DEWALT is going to appear at least once, if not multiple times. Individual experiences may vary, but it is rare to find someone who has had a bad experience with DEWALT power tools.
They may not be the greatest brand ever, but their tools are reliable and offer reasonably good performance for a pretty good price (especially when compared to some of the other high-end brands out there like Makita).
So, for the first review on this miter saw list, we are going to be taking a look at the DEWALT Sliding Compound Miter Saw. This is a classic DEWALT tool that has all the great features that you associate with the brand.
So, what is so good about this DEWALT Sliding Compound Miter Saw that it deserves to be reviewed on a list looking for the product?
First off, it is fairly powerful. As we will explain later on in our buying guide, power isn’t as important when looking at miter saws as when looking at regular table saws, but it is still important.
The power level of this miter saw is fairly impressive and pretty notable overall. The motor on the DEWALT is a respectable 15 amps and it delivers a hair under 4,000 RPM. In terms of total power, this may not be the most powerful miter saw out there, but we imagine that for most miter saw applications, it will more than meet your needs.
In addition to its power, it also has a great ability to cut very thick pieces of wood. It boasts an ability to cut wood up to around 7 inches in thickness.
It is also a very accurate saw, which is an important quality for any miter saw. The DEWALT has an adjustable back fence (they claim that it is a unique design, but this is hard to verify) that makes cutting at 45 or 90 degree angles very easy. Just in general, the DEWALT Sliding Compound Miter Saw is a great option for those wanting to make accurate woodworking cuts.
One particularly helpful feature is the dust collection system. A problem that has plagued woodworkers since the dawn of the hobby is the issue of dust. Cutting wood, especially fresh wood, has a tendency to produce a ton of sawdust.
The dust can cause numerous issues ranging from minor, annoying problems like coughing, to more major issues like tool failure or accidents. So, the fact that the DEWALT comes equipped with a dust collection system built-in to the tool that manages to remove around 3 quarters of the dust, which is really helpful in any scenario.
- Not that pricey given how well-made it is.
- Great dust collection system.
- Delivers accurate, powerful cuts.
- Fairly powerful motor.
- Backed up by 3 year warranty and DEWALT brand.
- Lacks some of the bells and whistles on other, higher-end miter saws (laser guiding for example).
Hitachi C10FCG 15-Amp 10″ Single Bevel Compound Miter Saw
Next up on our review list, we are looking at another miter saw from a brand that is almost as well-known and respected as DEWALT. Hitachi makes some pretty good power tools and the Hitachi C10FCG 15-Amp 10″ Single Bevel Compound Miter Saw is a great example of this. It is a very useful miter saw that is certainly a contender for the title of best product.
First off, in terms of power, the Hitachi is about on par with some of the other miter saws that we reviewed such as the DEWALT. Much like the last miter saw that we took a look at, the Hitachi C10FCG 15-Amp 10″ Single Bevel Compound Miter Saw has a 15 amp motor and it also has an RPM output of around 5000 as well.
On its own, the power output is good, but what makes it even more impressive is the fact that the Hitachi is very reasonably priced. In fact, it is among the most reasonably priced miter saws on our best product list. If you are on a budget but you also want a fairly good miter saw, this is an option for you.
Despite being reasonably priced, the Hitachi doesn’t compromise on quality. For example, it still makes very accurate cuts and it is highly adjustable. It can do both miter and bevel cuts with extreme accuracy. While the laser isn’t perfect (we will cover why that is shortly), it still manages to help somewhat with accuracy as well.
Finally, it’s also very light, which can help to make it a lot easier to use. You can easily get it into your preferred position and it is very easy to move if you ever need to do that for some reason.
It isn’t a perfect saw of course. It has two flaws that hold it back somewhat. First off, the laser attachment is extremely dim which isn’t a major issue, but it is annoying. Secondly, the saw’s dust collection system isn’t great, and it can be fairly annoying having to clean up all the excess dust.
- Very light.
- Fairly accurate.
- Decent power output.
- Laser is very dim.
- Dust collection system could be better.
TACKLIFE Sliding Compound Miter Saw
For this next review, we are going to be taking a look at the TACKLIFE Sliding Compound Miter Saw. This is another very good miter saw that fits in well with any tool shed and that handymen will be sure to love.
As with all the other reviews on this list, let’s start by looking at the power level of this miter saw. In terms of power, the TACKLIFE Sliding Compound Miter Saw isn’t anything special, but it also is perfectly adequate as well. It has a 15 amp motor and it has an RPM output of close to 4000.
So, in other words, it is about on par with other miter saws on this list (although the RPM is slightly lower). The power output may not be the highest around, but it is more than enough for the vast majority of jobs that you are going to be tackling with the saw.
One area where the TACKLIFE Sliding Compound Miter Saw really shines is when it comes to making accurate cuts. It has features that make it significantly easier for you to make double bevel cuts and miter cuts with precise accuracy. It also has a really good laser attachment that makes guiding your cuts a lot simpler as well.
Another really useful feature is the sliding fence. This is good for those of you who often find yourself cutting very large pieces of wood that don’t fit on regular miter saw cutting surfaces. It helps to give you a lot more versatility when it comes to the sorts of woodworking projects that you can tackle.
One issue with this miter saw is the fact that certain parts of the saw seem a bit too fragile. The actual core parts of the saw, like the blade and motor, are fine. However, things like the handle are a bit too fragile for our liking. You should make sure that you are very careful when transporting this saw or using it, as you don’t want to accidentally snap off a handle or anything like that.
- Great laser attachment.
- Sliding design makes it easier to cut longer pieces of wood.
- Decent power output.
- Good at making very accurate cuts.
- Certain components like handles break very easily.
Bosch Power Tools GCM12SD – 15 Amp 12 in. Corded Dual-Bevel Sliding Glide Miter Saw
For the fourth review on our list, we have another really strong contender for the title of best miter saw. As anyone who is familiar with power tools can tell you, Bosch is always very reliable and produces some great power tools. So, including the Bosch Power Tools GCM12SD – 15 Amp 12 in. Corded Dual-Bevel Sliding Glide Miter Saw on this list is an easy decision.
On the power side of the spectrum, we don’t have any complaints about the Bosch. It is roughly on par with all of the other high-end miter saws that we have reviewed so far in our search for the best miter saw. It outputs around 4000 RPM (give or take) and it has the standard 15 amp motor that you have seen in other miter saws.
One feature of this miter saw that does definitely need to be noted is unique Axial-Glide system. This is a unique system that is found only on Bosch miter saws. Basically, what it does is make it a lot easier for you to control the saw blade. This, in turn, makes it a lot easier to make extremely precise cuts, which is the purpose of the miter saw.
The fence on the Bosch is exceptionally well-made. It can be locked or unlocked with just the press of a button. It also doesn’t really require any adjustments out of the box, so you can get straight down to business the moment that you get the saw. The settings related to the actual cutting are also very easy to use.
For example, with a lot of miter saws, the bevel settings are often located way at the back of the saw. This makes it very inconvenient for you to change the settings since you have to stop working, move around to the back, and them come back around. On this saw, the settings are helpfully located right at the front.
- Extremely accurate.
- Very easy and convenient to use.
- Highly adjustable fence.
- Unique Axial-Glide system for more control.
- One of the more expensive options on this list.
Makita LS1219L 12″ Dual-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw with Laser
To end off this search for the best product we are going to be taking a look at the Makita LS1219L 12″ Dual-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw with Laser. This is an extremely high-quality miter saw that also happens to carry an extremely hefty price tag. However, if you are in the market for a really high-end miter saw, you certainly won’t be regretting your purchase if you go with this saw for quite a few reasons.
By far the biggest draws of the Makita are its accuracy and how easy it is to use. Starting with accuracy, the Makita makes it very simple for you to make any kind of cut with pinpoint accuracy. Not only does it have a great grip, but the laser attachment also works very well.
In terms of ease of use, the Makita boasts quite a few different attachments that make the miter saw a whole lot simpler to use. For example, it is very light, which makes moving it around easy. Also, it has a really good dust collection system, which again just makes cleaning up a lot simpler.
As we mentioned before, it isn’t a perfect miter saw by any means. It comes with a hefty price tag, which is due both to the actual quality of the tool and its brand name. Likewise, it also has a slightly lower RPM than most of the other tools on this list (3000 RPM vs around 4000 RPM), which is pretty disappointing.
- Great laser attachment for improved accuracy.
- Very good dust collection attachment.
- Extremely lightweight.
- Very durable; will last for a long time.
- One of the pricier miter saws on the market.
- Slightly lower RPM than other miter saws on this list.
Miter Saw Buying Guide
Above you saw our five reviews that make up our search for the best miter saw. However, that isn’t going to be the end of this article. As an additional bonus, we wanted to look at how one should actually go about buying a miter saw on their own.
It is important for any self-respecting handyman to know what to look for in a power tool; you can’t just rely on others telling you which tools to get and which to avoid (although expert recommendations shouldn’t be discounted either). So, in this second part, we are going to explain some of the important factors that need to be considered when searching for a miter saw.
The thing to keep in mind when searching for a miter saw is that it isn’t meant to be a powerhouse tool. If you want a saw with a lot of power to cut through large amounts of wood at once, then you should be going for a circular saw or a table saw.
However, just because miter saws are meant for more precise cuts doesn’t mean that power is useless. As you saw from our miter saw list, you still want to make sure that the miter saw that you buy has a decent power output. Personally, we would recommend something in the 15 amp range and that has a decently high RPM output (3000+).
Finding an accurate miter saw can be difficult because you don’t know how to test the accuracy of the tool until you have actually used it, which is obviously not very helpful. Because of this issue, we recommend keeping an eye out for certain features that help to make accurate cutting easier.
For starters, make sure that any miter saw that you buy has a good laser attachment. Lasers on miter saws really help to boost the accuracy levels and you will notice that your cuts are a lot more precise. Another thing to keep an eye out for is an adjustable fence. Being able to adjust the fence on the fly can lead to more accurate cuts.
It may seem minor at first but having a good dust collection system on your miter saw can really make your life a whole lot easier later on.
We mentioned this a few times while doing the reviews for our best miter saw list, but we want to mention it again because it is worth repeating. Nothing is worse than having to clean up loads of sawdust after a routine job. Being able to have the dust go directly into a bag is a feature that is worth looking for.
